BMHC Eid Press Statement
BMHC Eid Press Statement
Sunday 7th April 2024
The BMHC will be announcing the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Eid (and the new month of Shawwal) on Monday 8th April 2024, depending on the sighting of the new moon.
The Islamic calendar follows the lunar cycle, which begins each month with the sighting of the new crescent moon. If the new moon is sighted on Monday then Eid will be Tuesday 9th April. If it is not sighted then we will complete 30 days of Ramadan, as is sunnah (prophetic tradition) and Eid will be on Wednesday 10th April inshaAllah/ God willing.
The methodology for recognizing the new moon has been a longstanding topic of debate among the Muslim community. The Head Imam at the BMHC, Sheikh Anis Gouissem, commented that “Islamic jurisprudence permits interpretation in specific areas, which contributes to the diversity of opinions among scholars. This diversity extends to the methodology of moon sighting, causing differences in the day of Eid within the Muslim community.
While some may contend that advancements in science and the predictability of astronomical cycles render moon sighting unnecessary, many Muslims uphold it as a religious duty to still physically sight the new moon.
It is not accurate to say that one method takes precedence over another, if people are sincere in their intentions.
As a Muslim community in the UK, we should avoid belittling others or causing disunity. Ideally, we should strive to agree upon a single methodology that all Muslims can follow, allowing us to worship and celebrate as one ummah (nation).”
At the BMHC, there will be three Eid prayers scheduled at 8:15 am, 9:30 am, and 10:45 am. We encourage attendees to walk to the center. For those driving, please park responsibly and avoid disturbing our neighbors.
We hope and pray that everyone, has a fantastic and enjoyable Eid, regardless of the methodology they follow.
Eid Mubarak!
