Community Leaders at British Muslim Heritage Centre Call for Renewed Contribution Amid National Challenges
MANCHESTER, UK – 19th September 2025– The British Muslim Heritage Centre (BMHC) was the setting for a powerful and uplifting community event last night, which brought together civic leaders, philanthropists, and community members to celebrate outstanding achievements and issue a resonant call to action for increased Muslim contribution to British society.
The event, titled “Our Shared Britain: Forging a Future Together,” was convened in light of rising anti-immigration sentiment and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. The central theme focused on the vital role the British Muslim community plays in the nation’s social, economic, and cultural fabric and the need to amplify these efforts during challenging times.
The keynote address was delivered by Sir Mufti Hameed Patel, a respected faith leader and community figure. In a stirring speech, he urged the community to respond to current challenges with proactive engagement and excellence.
“In the face of narratives that seek to divide although wrongly construed as racism, our answer must be unity. In the face of economic hardship, our answer must be entrepreneurship and social responsibility. The challenges of anti-immigration rhetoric and the cost-of-living crisis are not insurmountable barriers but a call to action,” stated Sir Mufti Hamid Patel.
“The British Muslim story is not one of existing on the periphery, but of weaving our threads firmly into the central tapestry of this nation. Our contribution in the NHS, our innovation in business, our leadership in youth work, and our dedication to public service are not just acts of charity; they are a fundamental part of our British identity. We must now contribute more than ever—through our skills, our compassion, and our unwavering commitment to the prosperity of this country we call home.”
The evening also served to honour those who have already exemplified this spirit of contribution. Prestigious Awards of Excellence were presented to individuals and organisations across several categories:
- Healthcare Hero Award: Recognising frontline and administrative staff who went above and beyond, particularly throughout the pandemic and ongoing NHS pressures.
- Entrepreneurship & Innovation Award: Celebrating business leaders who have driven economic growth, created jobs, and fostered innovation within the UK.
- Youth & Gender Leadership Award: Honouring inspiring young leaders and advocates who have championed gender equality and empowered future generations.
- Lifetime Service Award: Acknowledging an individual with a sustained and profound impact on community cohesion and social welfare over many decades.
- Child Protégé Award: Celebrating the exceptional talent and potential of a young person in fields such as academia, arts, sports, or community service.
The event was attended by a wide array of dignitaries, including Deputy Lord Lieutenant Paul Griffith, Afzal Khan MP, Commander Umer Khan, and senior faith leaders from across the region.
Mr. Nasar Mahmood OBE Chair of the British Muslim Heritage Centre, whilst appreciating the participation of the community said: “Tonight was not just about celebration; it was about reaffirmation. We reaffirmed our commitment to Britain and to working alongside our fellow citizens to build a stronger, more resilient society. The incredible award winners we honoured tonight are living proof of the positive impact our community makes every single day. They are the beacons that light the way forward.”
